A Dark and Healthy Night

Not Yet Rated
Indulging in a sweet treat over the weekend may not be so bad for your health.

When you reach for something sweet, grab a bit of dark chocolate. Recent research suggests it may help relax blood vessels and improve blood flow. That's because it's rich in flavonoids, a type of antioxidant believed to fight aging and disease. Just be sure to stick to a small helping: chocolate is also high in both fat and calories.

Chocolate is rich in flavonoids, which are antioxidants that act on endothelial cells that line the interior of blood vessels. Endothelial cells participate in blood pressure regulation, blood clotting, atherosclerotic plaque formation, and inflammation. Although flavonoids in chocolate enhance blood vessel function temporarily, more research is needed to determine if they can help boost overall cardiovascular health and reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. However, researchers agree that consuming large amounts of chocolate could contribute to obesity and heart disease because chocolate is high in both fat and calories. If you choose to indulge, do so in moderation with dark chocolate, which is higher in flavonoids than milk chocolate. Exercise, weight control, and eating a nutrient-rich, calorie-poor diet are all important for maintaining cardiovascular health.

RealAge Benefit: Getting the right amount of antioxidants through diet or supplements can make your RealAge 6 years younger.
